Wes Thiessen, an expert in Islamic studies, has both practical and academic background in the Muslim world. His experience began with two years living in the Middle East, in Jerusalem, while completing a graduate degree in Historical Geography of the Ancient Near East. Additionally, he spent 15 years living in North Africa, in the city founded by the Arabs in the seventh century, Kairouan. Wes taught in post-secondary education, learning about the culture, language and history of the region first hand, through daily interaction and experience of it. During that time he completed a PhD in Islamic history at a Canadian university, with a focus on the development of Islamic law. These studies focused on the text of Imam Sahnun, a jurist from Kairouan and a significant player in the development of Maliki law in North Africa. Dr. Thiessen's lengthy teaching career in North Africa has given him vivid insights into the lives of youth in the Arab world as well as the uncertain transitions currently taking place in many nations of the modern Middle East and North Africa.
An avid lover of history, Wes enjoys building relationships and connecting with people of Middle Eastern origin. Currently in Canada, he is networking and connecting the Christian and Muslim communities in a globalized world. With ever increasing immigrants of Eastern background coming to the West, along with widespread fear and ignorance of Muslims within their new found communities, there is a great need and the potential to build bridges through relational networking and education. Better communication between these communities will work toward greater understanding and foster an environment of peace and harmony.
Due to his unique background and experience, Dr. Thiessen brings an unusual blend of solid scholarship along with awareness of the practical realities of modern Islam. His commitment to outstanding educational experiences, will ensure your questions receive answers. From a cursory understanding of the basics of Islam to an in-depth comparison of theology between Islam and Christianity, Dr. Thiessen can provide you with an excellent learning experience that will meet your needs. Don’t hesitate to contact him if you have any questions now or after signing up for his course!
